What Is an IEC Code and Who Needs It?

An IEC (Import Export Code) is a 10-digit unique identification number issued by DGFT under the Ministry of Commerce. It is mandatory for any business or individual importing or exporting goods.

Every commercial importer needs an IEC. Banks require it for remittances. Customs requires it on every file Bill of Entry and Shipping Bill.

Exemptions: personal imports below ₹10 lakh, charitable imports with DGFT exemption, and government imports. For business use, IEC is mandatory.

DGFT issues only one IEC per PAN.

Step-by-Step IEC Registration on DGFT Portal

DGFT portal (dgft.gov.in) is the only official channel.

  1. Create DGFT Account: Go to dgft.gov.in → Register → create account with email and mobile. Verify via OTP.
  2. Log In and Select IEC Application: Services → IEC → Apply for IEC.
  3. Fill in PAN Details: Enter business PAN. The system auto-fetches some CBDT data.
  4. Enter Business Details: Legal name, business type, and registered address. Match with PAN and GST records.
  5. Enter Bank Details: Bank name, branch, account number, IFSC. Upload cancelled cheque or bank certificate.
  6. Upload Documents: PAN card and one address proof.
  7. Pay Fee: ₹500 via net banking, UPI, or card.
  8. Submit and Receive IEC: IEC generates instantly if records match. Download e-IEC from portal.

Save DGFT credentials for future modifications.

IEC Registration Fee and Processing Time

IEC registration fee is ₹500. Most applications receive IEC instantly after payment if PAN and bank details match.

ScenarioProcessing Time
PAN and bank details match — no manual reviewInstant (within minutes of payment)
Minor discrepancy — needs manual review3–5 business days
Show-cause notice issued7–15 business days (must reply with clarification)
Rejection and re-applicationAdditional 3–5 days after correction

No renewal fee — IEC is valid for life. Modifications are free.

IEC for Different Business Types

DGFT accepts IEC applications from all legal business structures, but document requirements and the name printed on the IEC certificate vary.

Business TypeDocumentsApplicant Name on IEC
ProprietorshipPAN (owner) + address proofOwner's name
Partnership firmFirm PAN + partnership deedFirm name
LLPLLP PAN + certificate of incorporationLLP name
Private LimitedCompany PAN + MCA certificateCompany name
Individual (personal)Personal PANIndividual's name

Sole proprietors use personal PAN, so IEC shows the owner's name. This is normal. If you convert to a company, surrender the old IEC and apply under the new company PAN.

What You Can and Cannot Do Without an IEC

Without an IEC, customs will not clear any commercial import or export shipment. The Bill of Entry (import) and Shipping Bill (export) both require a valid IEC number. No IEC = shipment stuck at port or airport.

Blocked without IEC: commercial imports, exports, and foreign remittances. Your customs clearance process cannot begin without a valid IEC.

Allowed without IEC: personal imports below ₹10 lakh CIF, charitable imports with DGFT exemption, and government imports.

IEC Modification and Cancellation

Modify IEC free via DGFT → Manage IEC → Modify. Most approved in 24–48 hours. To cancel: Surrender IEC.

Inactive IEC: deactivates after 3 years of non-use or missing Annual Returns. Reactivate by submitting pending returns. Takes 3–7 business days.

IEC Linked to GST — Do You Need a Separate IEC?

IEC and GSTIN are separate — having GST does not give you IEC. Register at DGFT separately.

ICEGATE validates IEC for every air import services clearance. Banks require IEC for remittance.

AEO registration is the next step for frequent importers. Requires 3 years of history and gives 90%+ green-channel clearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an IEC code in India?

IEC (Import Export Code) is a 10-digit unique code issued by DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It is mandatory for any business or individual importing goods into India or exporting goods from India commercially. Without IEC, customs will not clear your shipment and banks will not process foreign trade remittances.

How do I apply for an IEC code online in India?

Apply at dgft.gov.in — register a user account, navigate to Services → IEC → Apply for IEC, enter your PAN, business details, and bank account details, upload documents, and pay ₹500. Most applicants receive their IEC instantly after payment if PAN and bank records match. Download the e-IEC certificate directly from the portal.

How much does IEC registration cost in India?

The IEC registration fee is ₹500, payable online via the DGFT portal (net banking, UPI, credit/debit card). There is no annual renewal fee — IEC is issued once and remains valid for life unless cancelled. Modification of IEC details (address, bank account) is free.

How long does IEC registration take?

Most IEC applications receive instant approval after payment if PAN and bank details match CBDT and banking records. If manual review is needed (discrepancy in records), processing takes 3–5 business days. DGFT may issue a show-cause notice for clarification, extending the process by 7–15 days.

Is IEC required for importing personal goods to India?

IEC is NOT required for importing personal goods for personal use (not for commercial resale) if the CIF value is below ₹10 lakh per year. It is also not required for imports by charitable institutions under specific exemptions and government departments. For all commercial imports — whether for sale, manufacturing, or business use — IEC is mandatory.

Can I have two IEC codes for the same business?

No. DGFT issues only one IEC per PAN. A business can have only one IEC linked to its PAN. If you have multiple business entities (different companies), each entity has its own PAN and therefore its own IEC. You cannot have multiple IECs for the same legal entity.

What happens if my IEC is deactivated?

DGFT deactivates IEC if it is not used (no import/export in the ICEGATE records) for 3 consecutive years or if the importer/exporter hasn't filed the Annual Return on the DGFT portal. Reactivation: log in to DGFT portal → Manage IEC → Reactivate → submit pending Annual Returns. Process takes 3–7 business days.
