LCL imports to Bangalore work by consolidating multiple importers' cargo into one container at the origin. Your shipment is measured in CBM (cubic metres) and charged per-CBM. After arrival at ICD Whitefield, the container is deconsolidated and each importer's cargo is cleared separately. LCL is cost-effective for 0.5–15 CBM shipments.
The LCL pipeline has seven distinct steps. First, your cargo arrives at the origin CFS (Container Freight Station) where it is weighed, measured, and logged. Second, CFS staff consolidate multiple importers' boxes and pallets into one sealed container. Third, the container is loaded onto the vessel for ocean transit. Fourth, the vessel arrives at JNPT or Chennai Port. Fifth, the container is transferred by rail or road to ICD Whitefield. Sixth, the container is deconsolidated — each importer's cargo is separated. Seventh, your Licensed CHA files individual customs clearance and arranges delivery.

LCL pricing uses the W/M (weight or measure) rule: the carrier charges per CBM or per 1,000 kg, whichever yields higher revenue. For most consumer goods, volume (CBM) governs pricing. For metals and dense materials, weight governs. Benchmark LCL freight rates to Bengaluru: China (Shanghai) at USD 35–65/CBM ocean freight plus destination charges; Europe (Hamburg/Rotterdam) at USD 80–140/CBM; UAE (Jebel Ali) at USD 45–90/CBM. CBM (cubic metre) = Length (m) × Width (m) × Height (m). A carton measuring 60 cm × 40 cm × 50 cm = 0.12 CBM. W/M means the freight charge is calculated on whichever is greater: the cargo's volume in CBM, or its weight in metric tonnes (with 1,000 kg = 1 tonne). If your cargo weighs 200 kg but measures 0.5 CBM, you pay for 0.5 CBM. If it weighs 800 kg but measures 0.3 CBM, you pay for 0.8 tonnes. Always calculate both before requesting a quote.
After deconsolidation at ICD Whitefield, each importer receives their individual House Bill of Lading (HBL). Your CHA files a separate Bill of Entry for each importer on ICEGATE. The RMS channel assignment — green, orange, or red — applies per consignment. Green-channel clearance for low-risk commodities with accurate documentation can complete in 1–2 days after deconsolidation. Standard LCL clearance from vessel arrival to delivery takes 3–7 days, which is longer than FCL due to the deconsolidation step.

There is no regulatory minimum. However, most co-loaders have a practical minimum of 0.5 CBM or 100 kg. For very small shipments (under 0.2 CBM), air freight or courier is often more practical. For 0.5–15 CBM, LCL sea freight is the most cost-effective mode to Bengaluru.
