How your cargo leaves Bangalore for UK
Bangalore is an inland city, so the pickup, the departure gateway and the destination handoff are three separate decisions. Here is how each works for UK.
By air
UK-bound air cargo can be routed to London area airports and to regional airports such as Manchester, depending on the consignee's location and the carrier service. Air cargo leaves Bangalore through Kempegowda International Airport (BLR, customs station INBLR4). We file your export customs clearance as your Licensed CHA before the cargo is accepted for the flight. More on BLR air cargo.
By sea
Container cargo is normally planned to a UK deep-sea port such as Felixstowe, Southampton or London Gateway, then moved inland by road or rail. Bangalore has no seaport. Sea cargo moves by road or rail to a coastal gateway, most often Chennai (INCHQ1) or Nhava Sheva near Mumbai (INNSA1). Where the booking allows, export formalities for containers can be handled at ICD Whitefield (INWFD6) in Bangalore instead of at the port. We choose the gateway per shipment from the carrier service, cut-off dates and cost, not from a fixed routing. Chennai, Nhava Sheva and ICD Whitefield are customs stations we work at.
Where it arrives and who takes over
This page covers the whole of the UK. Tell us the consignee's city or postcode so we plan the right arrival point and inland leg. If the cargo is going to Northern Ireland, say so at the start: the customs procedure is different.
Our licence and clearance work are in India. Import clearance and delivery in UK are done by your buyer's customs broker or an appointed destination agent, and we coordinate documents with them.
Air, LCL or FCL to UK
Choose by how urgent the cargo is and how much of it there is. If you are not sure, say so in the quote form and we compare the options for your shipment.
Air freight
Fastest, priced by chargeable weight- Suits: urgent retail or engineering dispatches, samples, and high-value cargo.
- Priced on: chargeable weight. How it is calculated.
- Check first: batteries, liquids and dangerous goods need airline acceptance.
Sea LCL
Shared container, for smaller cargo- Suits: consignments of a few CBM for a UK buyer who can accept a consolidation sailing.
- How it moves: consolidated in India and separated at the UK port, so allow for extra handling.
- Check first: earlier cut-offs than air. LCL exports from Bangalore.
Sea FCL
Full container, for larger cargo- Suits: full 20 ft or 40 ft loads for one UK consignee.
- How it moves: sealed after loading and cleared as one unit. FCL exports from Bangalore.
- Check first: UK port charges and any storage if the importer is slow to clear.
From pickup to delivery
The five stages of a Bangalore to UK export, and who handles each one. This is an explanation of the process, not live shipment status.
Pickup in Bangalore
We coordinate collection from your Bangalore address and check packing, marking and documents.
Sea AirExport clearance
Shipping Bill filed and customs clearance completed on our own CHA licence, before the cargo is accepted by the carrier.
Sea AirGateway and departure
Air via BLR, or sea via Chennai or Nhava Sheva, onward to a UK port or airport chosen with the carrier.
Carrier and Sea AirArrival in UK
UK import declaration by the importer or its customs agent, under the importer's EORI. Northern Ireland follows a different procedure.
Importer or destination agentDelivery
Final delivery follows the scope in your quote: to the port or airport, or onward to the consignee.

Timing to plan for
Each stage has its own driver, so we do not add them into a single door-to-door promise. Transit ranges are planning assumptions reviewed on 3 October 2026, not carrier schedules or guarantees.
| Stage | What happens | Planning assumption |
|---|---|---|
| Pickup and packing in Bangalore | We coordinate collection once cargo and documents are ready. | Scheduled per booking and confirmed in the quote. |
| Export clearance | We file the Shipping Bill and complete customs clearance ahead of the carrier cut-off. | Planned before cut-off. It depends on complete documents and on whether customs selects the cargo for examination, so no clearance time is guaranteed. |
| Departure wait | The time between clearance and the next suitable flight or sailing. | Air: the next suitable flight. Sea: the gate-in cut-off and sailing day set by the carrier service. Confirmed per booking. |
| Main carriage | Airport to airport, or port to port. | Air: about 2 to 5 days airport to airport, depending on routing. Sea: roughly 3 to 6 weeks port to port, longer where the service transships. |
| Destination processing | Importer's customs declaration, any HMRC checks, payment of duty and VAT, and release. | Depends on the importer's documents and the destination authorities. |
| Final delivery | Collection from the port or airport, then road delivery to the consignee. | Quoted separately where it goes beyond the port or airport. |
What a quote covers
We do not publish rates, because they depend on the cargo, route, season and carrier. What we do is state the scope in writing, so you can compare quotes like for like.
| Component | Usually paid by | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| International freight | Shipper or consignee, per Incoterm | Air is priced on chargeable weight; sea on the container or CBM. Season, routing and carrier surcharges move the figure, so it is quoted per shipment. |
| Origin handling in India | Shipper | Pickup coordination, packing checks, terminal or CFS handling and documentation. |
| Export customs clearance | Shipper | Shipping Bill filing and clearance by Sea Air as your Licensed CHA. |
| Carrier surcharges | Shipper or consignee, per Incoterm | Fuel, security and seasonal surcharges, shown in the quote or flagged as subject to change. |
| UK import charges | Importer | Customs duty, import VAT, customs agent fees and port or terminal handling. VAT-registered importers can usually account for import VAT through their VAT return. |
| Storage, demurrage and detention | Whoever delays collection or return | Exposure arises if documents are late, cargo is not collected, or containers are not returned in time. |
| Cargo insurance | You | Sea Air does not arrange cargo insurance. Arrange cover with your own insurer. |
Our quote states

Not included unless stated
- Destination duties, taxes and broker fees
- Storage, demurrage and detention
- Cargo insurance, which we do not arrange
- Inland delivery beyond the port or airport
What the UK side needs to plan for
These are the points that most often decide whether cargo is released smoothly. They were checked against the official sources listed at the end of this page on 3 October 2026, and they depend on your goods and your buyer.
The UK importer needs an EORI number
An EORI number starting GB is needed to import goods into England, Wales and Scotland. Movements involving Northern Ireland may need an XI number. Ask your buyer for their EORI early: the declaration cannot be made without it.
A declaration is made by the importer or an agent
GOV.UK notes that most businesses use a customs agent or transporter to make the import declaration. The importer supplies commodity codes, the value of the goods and any licences, and checks labelling and marketing rules.
Great Britain and Northern Ireland are different
Goods moving to Northern Ireland follow separate procedures. If the consignee is in Northern Ireland, tell us before we quote so the scope and documents are right.
Trade agreement: India-UK CETA
The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement entered into force on 15 July 2026. Reduced or zero tariffs apply only where the goods meet the agreement's rules of origin, proof of origin is available and the importer claims the preference. Check your product's tariff line; do not assume every export is duty-free. India FTA guide.
Regulated goods need licences or approvals
Food, plants, medicines, chemicals and some electronics need approvals before arrival. The importer is responsible for these, and we ask for the details at quote stage.
Trade agreement status: The India-UK CETA entered into force on 15 July 2026. Preference depends on the product, its origin and a valid proof of origin.
Who does what
Clear scope avoids surprises at the destination. This is the usual split; your quote confirms it for your shipment.
Sea Air handles
- Pickup coordination in Bangalore
- Export documentation checks and the Shipping Bill, filed on our own Licensed CHA licence (No. 11/1999)
- Air booking as an IATA-accredited agent, or ocean booking through carriers and consolidators
- Handover to the carrier and coordination with your buyer's broker or agent on documents
- A written quote stating scope, inclusions and exclusions
Your UK importer handles
- Holds a valid GB (or XI) EORI number
- Makes the customs declaration, or appoints an agent to
- Provides commodity codes, value and any licences
- Pays duty, import VAT and port charges unless the Incoterm says otherwise
- Claims CETA preference where it applies
Depends on your goods
- Product approvals or conformity certificates
- Dangerous-goods paperwork and packing
- Packaging standards such as ISPM 15 for wood
- Origin proof for any trade-agreement preference
Documents to have ready
Indian export paperwork is largely the same for every destination. The destination adds its own requirements, covered above.
- Commercial invoice and packing list, consistent in value, description and quantities. How to prepare them.
- Importer-Exporter Code (IEC) and AD code registered for the port or airport used. IEC guide and AD code guide.
- Shipping Bill, which we file as your Licensed CHA. Shipping Bill guide.
- Certificate of origin, when your buyer, the destination or a trade agreement needs one. Certificate of origin guide.
- Product documents that depend on the goods: safety data sheets for chemicals, test or conformity reports, licences, phytosanitary or health certificates.
The full list is on our export documents checklist. Requirements change with the goods, so we confirm the list for your shipment.
A planning example
Illustrative planning example, not a client case. A Bangalore garment exporter has 22 cartons, about 340 kg and 2.6 CBM, for a retailer in Leeds, ready in three weeks. We would ask whether the buyer holds an EORI, whether CETA preference is being claimed (which needs origin proof), the HS codes and the delivery date, then quote air and LCL with the inland leg shown separately. No transit time or price is implied by this example.
We will add real, approved case studies here when a client agrees to be named.
Questions about exporting to UK
Does my UK buyer need an EORI number?
Yes, to import into England, Wales or Scotland they need a number starting GB. Northern Ireland movements may need an XI number. The customs declaration cannot be made without it.
Is there a trade agreement that lowers UK duty on Indian goods?
The India-UK CETA entered into force on 15 July 2026. Lower or zero duty applies only where the product meets the rules of origin and the importer claims it with proof of origin. Check your tariff line.
What is different about shipping to Northern Ireland?
Goods going to Northern Ireland follow separate customs procedures from Great Britain. Tell us at the start so we quote the right scope and ask for the right documents.
Which UK port will my container use?
Typically a deep-sea port such as Felixstowe, Southampton or London Gateway, chosen with the carrier service and the consignee's location. We confirm it before you commit.
How is this different from your London export page?
This page covers the UK as a whole, including regional delivery and Northern Ireland. The London page focuses on London and Heathrow air cargo.
Do you deliver to the buyer's door in the UK?
We quote to the UK port or airport, and to the consignee's address where a UK agent or the buyer's agent arranges delivery. The quote states which scope is included.
Who pays UK import VAT and duty?
The importer, unless you agree otherwise in the Incoterm, such as DDP. Say what you have agreed with your buyer and we reflect it in the quote scope.
Ready to plan your UK shipment?
Share the cargo, the destination and when it is ready. We reply during business hours with questions or a scoped quote.
