How to Import from Switzerland to India: EFTA TEPA, Freight & Customs Duty (2026)
Reviewed by Mohit Malpani, MBA (University of Essex, London) — Co-Founder, Sea Air Cargo Systems, Licensed Customs House Agent (CHA Licence No. 11/1999).
Switzerland supplies India with luxury watches, pharmaceuticals and biotech products, precision instruments, medical devices, and chocolate. It is a member of EFTA, not the European Union, and is covered by the India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement signed in March 2024. This guide covers landlocked freight routing via EU ports, the TEPA's exact status, customs duty at MFN rates, and clearance at BLR airport and ICD Whitefield.
Direct Answer
Switzerland is landlocked, so sea freight routes via Rotterdam or Genoa to Bengaluru in about 24–34 days; air freight from Zurich (ZRH) to BLR takes 5–8 days. The India–EFTA TEPA was signed on 10 March 2024, but its tariff concessions apply only once it enters into force after ratification — until then, Swiss goods attract standard MFN duty (watches 10–25%, pharma 0–10%).
Sea Freight from Switzerland to Bengaluru: Routing via EU Ports
Switzerland has no seaport of its own, so Swiss container cargo reaches India through a neighbouring European gateway. The common routings are Basel → road or rail → Rotterdam (NLRTM) → Suez Canal → JNPT (Mumbai) → ICD Whitefield, or via Genoa (ITGOA) for Mediterranean-origin cargo and Hamburg (DEHAM) for northern routings. Total door-to-door transit is 24–34 days: 2–4 days for EU pre-carriage to the port, 20–26 days ocean transit to JNPT via Suez, 3–5 days customs clearance at ICD Whitefield, and 1 day road delivery to Bengaluru.
Rotterdam is usually the most reliable choice thanks to deep-draught mainline frequency, while Genoa can be marginally faster for the Suez leg if your Swiss supplier is closer to the south. Main carriers on these routings include Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, and Hapag-Lloyd, with weekly sailings. For very high-value, low-volume Swiss goods such as watches and precision instruments, air freight from Zurich is almost always the more sensible choice.
Cost context: FCL 20-foot from Rotterdam to JNPT (including EU pre-carriage from Switzerland) is approximately USD 1,200–2,000 depending on season and contract terms, plus inland haulage of ₹8,000–₹15,000 to Bengaluru. LCL is economical for shipments under 10 CBM, charged at approximately USD 50–85 per CBM. How does Swiss cargo reach an Indian port when Switzerland is landlocked?
Swiss exporters use through bills of lading. A truck or rail wagon moves the container from Basel or Zurich to Rotterdam, Antwerp, Genoa, or Hamburg under a single transport document, and the ocean carrier takes over from there. The transit days quoted by a freight forwarder normally include this EU pre-carriage, but confirm it is included in your all-in rate to avoid surprise origin charges.
Air Freight from Zurich to Bangalore Airport: Cost and Transit
Zurich (ZRH) to BLR is the primary air cargo corridor for Swiss exports to South India, and it is the preferred mode for high-value, low-volume goods. Transit time is 5–8 days door-to-door, including origin handling, flight time, customs clearance at BLR, and last-mile delivery. Key carriers: Swiss WorldCargo (the Lufthansa Group cargo airline, based at ZRH), Lufthansa Cargo (via Frankfurt FRA), Emirates SkyCargo (via Dubai DXB), and Qatar Airways Cargo (via Doha DOH).
Approximate air freight rate ZRH→BLR: ₹360–₹580/kg for general cargo, with high-value watches and precision instruments often requiring additional security and insurance handling that is priced separately. Air freight is the right call for luxury watches, biotech and pharmaceutical samples, urgent medical devices, and sensitive precision instruments where a delay or rough handling costs far more than the freight premium.
For Bengaluru importers, Swiss WorldCargo's direct handling at Zurich offers a clean, secure chain for high-value consignments. Sea Air Cargo Systems coordinates collection from Swiss suppliers, manages secure handling, and arranges express customs clearance at BLR airport within 6–12 hours for RMS green-channel shipments.
The India–EFTA TEPA: Signed, But Not Yet in Force
This is the section importers most often misunderstand, so it is worth getting exactly right. Switzerland is a member of EFTA (the European Free Trade Association: Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein), not of the European Union. Switzerland is therefore not covered by any India–EU negotiation and is not part of the EU's single market for goods. It is covered instead by the India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA), which India and the four EFTA states signed on 10 March 2024.
Crucially, signing is not the same as entry into force. A trade agreement's tariff concessions take effect only once it enters into force after ratification by the parties, and the TEPA's tariff schedule therefore has not yet delivered claimable duty cuts on the import date. Until the TEPA is confirmed in force, Swiss goods attract standard MFN (Most Favoured Nation) tariff rates. Do not assume you can claim EFTA-preferential duty today — check the current in-force status with DGFT or CBIC immediately before clearance, and have your CHA confirm it on the day the Bill of Entry is filed.
When the TEPA does enter into force, it is expected to reduce or eliminate duty on many lines over a phased schedule, alongside a headline EFTA investment commitment into India. Until then, plan your landed cost on MFN rates. IGST remains creditable for GST-registered businesses, and the EPCG scheme can still zero BCD on capital goods against an export obligation — read our EPCG scheme for capital goods guide.
| Product Category | HS Chapter | BCD (MFN, approx.) | IGST | Total Effective Duty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wrist Watches | 9101 / 9102 | 10–25% | 18% | ~31–48% |
| Pharmaceuticals | 30 | 0–10% | 12% | ~12–23% |
| Precision Instruments | 90 | 0–7.5% | 18% | ~19.5–28.5% |
| Medical Devices | 9018+ | 0–10% | 12–18% | ~12–30% |
| Chocolate & Confectionery | 1806 | ~10–30% | 18–28% | ~31–66% |
| Cheese & Dairy | 0406 | ~30–60% (protected) | 12% | ~45–79% |
These are working MFN estimates for 2026 and will shift once the TEPA enters into force. Always confirm your exact HS code with CBIC or our HS code finder, then calculate your landed cost from Switzerland. Compliance for Swiss Goods: CDSCO, FSSAI & the CE Mark Question
The CE mark is NOT automatically accepted by India, and that is equally true for Swiss-made goods even though Switzerland has sectoral agreements with the EU. CE documentation does not replace mandatory Indian certifications where they apply. For Swiss imports, the compliance picture splits by product type.
Pharmaceuticals and medical devices are the major regulated category. Imported drugs require CDSCO registration and an import licence; medical devices listed as notified equipment need CDSCO listing or registration before customs clearance. Swiss-origin pharma from major manufacturers comes with full documentation, but the Indian CDSCO approval is held in the importer's name, not the supplier's — so confirm it is in place before shipping. Chocolate and food (HS 1806) require FSSAI clearance and label compliance; confectionery and dairy also attract relatively high duty. Precision instruments and watches generally have no mandatory Indian certification beyond documentation, though any wireless-enabled device needs WPC ETA.
Our licensed CHA reviews every Swiss shipment for certification gaps before the Bill of Entry is filed. We confirm CDSCO and FSSAI validity, check whether the TEPA is in force and preferential duty is claimable, and arrange clearance at BLR airport and ICD Whitefield. See our FSSAI clearance guide, CDSCO registration guide, and the full India customs clearance guide.
How to Import from Switzerland to India: Step-by-Step Process
- Identify HS code and duty — Determine the correct HS code for your Swiss product using the CBIC tariff or our HS code finder. Check whether the EPCG scheme applies for capital goods and note that EFTA TEPA tariff cuts apply only once the agreement enters into force.
- Check certification requirements — Verify CDSCO registration for pharmaceuticals and medical devices, FSSAI for chocolate and food, BIS CRS for any electronics, and whether precision instruments need additional approval before you place the order.
- Get freight quote and book — Because Switzerland is landlocked, request FCL or LCL sea freight routed via Rotterdam, Genoa, or Hamburg to JNPT or Chennai, or air freight from Zurich ZRH to BLR. Ask for all-in rates including EU pre-carriage.
- Prepare export documentation — Ensure the Swiss supplier provides commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or airway bill, certificate of origin, CE documentation, and CDSCO or FSSAI registration copies where applicable.
- File Bill of Entry pre-arrival — Your CHA files the Bill of Entry on ICEGATE with the HS code, CIF value, and attached documents. Swiss cargo typically clears in 6 to 12 hours at BLR airport or 3 to 5 days at ICD Whitefield.
- Pay duty and take delivery — Pay BCD plus Social Welfare Surcharge plus IGST via ICEGATE e-payment, at MFN rates unless TEPA is confirmed in force. For EPCG-covered capital goods, furnish the licence to claim 0% BCD. Your CHA coordinates delivery to your Bengaluru facility.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does sea freight from Switzerland to Bengaluru take?
Because Switzerland is landlocked, sea freight moves by road or rail to Rotterdam, Genoa, or Hamburg, then ships to Bengaluru. Total door-to-door transit is about 24 to 34 days: 2 to 4 days EU pre-carriage, 20 to 26 days ocean transit to JNPT via Suez, plus 3 to 5 days customs clearance at ICD Whitefield, plus 1 day road delivery. Air freight from Zurich to BLR takes 5 to 8 days.
What is the customs duty on Swiss watches and pharmaceuticals imported to India?
Wrist watches (HS 9101 and 9102) attract BCD of roughly 10 to 25 percent plus 18 percent IGST. Pharmaceuticals (HS Chapter 30) attract BCD of 0 to 10 percent plus 12 percent IGST, while precision instruments (Chapter 90) attract BCD of 0 to 7.5 percent. These are MFN rates; verify the current CBIC rate and TEPA status before you ship.
Does the India-EFTA TEPA reduce duty on Swiss imports?
The India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement was signed on 10 March 2024, but its tariff concessions take effect only once it enters into force after ratification by all parties. Until it is in force, Swiss goods attract standard MFN duty. Check the current in-force status with DGFT or CBIC before assuming any preferential rate, as the schedule has not yet delivered claimable tariff cuts.
Is Switzerland covered by the India-EU free trade agreement?
No. Switzerland is a member of EFTA, not the European Union, and there is no India-EU FTA in force either. Switzerland is covered by the separate India-EFTA TEPA, signed in March 2024, which is distinct from any India-EU negotiation. Until the TEPA enters into force, standard MFN rates apply to Swiss goods.
What air freight carriers fly from Switzerland to Bangalore?
Key carriers are Swiss WorldCargo from Zurich ZRH, Lufthansa Cargo via Frankfurt, Emirates SkyCargo via Dubai, and Qatar Airways Cargo via Doha. Door-to-door air freight from Zurich to Bengaluru typically takes 5 to 8 days including origin handling and customs clearance at BLR.
Can Sea Air Cargo Systems handle Swiss pharma and watch imports?
Yes. As a Licensed Customs House Agent since 1999, we verify CDSCO registration for pharmaceuticals and medical devices, FSSAI for chocolate, confirm EPCG eligibility for capital goods, and file the Bill of Entry on ICEGATE with clearance at BLR airport and ICD Whitefield. We also confirm whether TEPA preferential duty is claimable on the day of clearance.
